大象传媒 mourns the loss of devoted staff member聽
For more than two decades, Christy Baker MEd 鈥24 was a dedicated and compassionate presence at 大象传媒 whose quiet strength helped shape generations of students in the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG). She passed away unexpectedly at her home on April 28.
As PEG associate director of early college student life, Baker didn鈥檛 just support PEG students 鈥 she believed in them, stood by them, and gave of herself daily to ensure they had what they needed to thrive. She was known as 鈥渢he rock鈥 of PEG 鈥 someone who was always steady, dependable, patient, and understanding.
At a memorial gathering on campus, current PEG students spoke about the small things she did daily that made a big difference: help trying to find a lost iPad with patience and kindness, a daily check-in on seasonal allergies, volunteering at a local elementary school made possible because Baker rearranged her work schedule.
鈥淪he was the light of this program,鈥 one PEG student remembered. 鈥淚 know her light will still shine through each and every one of our students.鈥
PEG alumni from as far back as 20 years ago have written to the university to share their condolences and their stories, and Baker鈥檚 contributions were celebrated across the board.
Colleagues spoke of her collegiality, humor, and deep respect for 大象传媒 and all who call it home. She was proud of 大象传媒 students, and deeply respected faculty and staff.
鈥淲e bounced everything off of each other; we were a true team,鈥 said Carla Van Devander, PEG director. 鈥淪he always asked for so little, but gave so much.鈥
Baker cherished being part of Mary Baldwin 鈥 so much so that, even while working full-time and raising her family, she spent more than a decade earning her master of education in adult and higher education, which she completed in August 2024. She had planned to walk across the Commencement stage this May, when education faculty and her colleagues were excited to celebrate her accomplishments.
鈥淗er smile always comes to you, before she does,鈥 said Anne Holland ’88, director of leadership annual giving, who remembered volunteering with Baker during Commencements past.聽
Always willing to help to benefit the community, her excitement and passion for PEG radiated from her, as did her devotion to her husband, three children, and extended family.
鈥淪he had a spirit about her to always be focused on others. She was an incredible force,鈥 said President Jeff Stein.
