TheĚýMargarettĚýKableĚýRussell Award is given in memory ofĚýMargarettĚýKableĚýRussell, editor of the1902 Bluestocking and the first woman member of the Mary Baldwin Board of Trustees.ĚýThe award is made annually by the Mary Baldwin Alumni Association and the Board of Trustees.ĚýThe recipient, selected by a vote of the faculty, is a rising senior outstanding in academic achievement, character, and service.ĚýThe person honored is known as the Russell Scholar and works on a special research project in her field.

The Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) Society is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, and membership is an emblem of high achievement and exceptional potential, conferred upon barely one percent of college seniors nationwide. To be elected to PBK, a student must have demonstrated a commitment to the pursuit of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, and eligibility requirements include a high GPA, foreign language, mathematics, and laboratory science. TheĚýHammock AwardĚýis named after Professor Gordon Hammock, a deeply loved and well-respected member of the business faculty who passed away a number of years ago. One of his greatest gifts was his ability to mentor students. To honor him, the university created an endowed fund that carries a cash award for the recipient. The student who receives this award exemplifies Hammock’s focus on teaching and mentoring students to be ethical leaders in business.

Bethany Taylor ’20 has been an outstanding lab assistant and tutor for both organic chemistry and general chemistry. She has a talent and enthusiasm for environmental chemistry research, and she has had two abstracts accepted for the 2020 American Chemical Society Meeting and Exposition. She plans to attend graduate school in analytical chemistry at Loughborough University in the UK.
The Pinkston Biochemistry Award recipient is a talented and motivated biochemistry student who has shown outstanding performance in his or her coursework.ĚýĚý
Mahalia Huba ’20 has worked part-time performing research in a lab at the University of Virginia during her senior year, and she plans to continue with this work next year while she applies to medical school.ĚýĚýĚý
