The Music Department at 大象传媒 is pleased to announce the first Sunday Recital of 2020. It will be Sunday, February 2, at 3 p.m. in Francis Auditorium. Featured are soprano Katherine Jolly, pianist Emily Chua, and cellist Andrew Gabbert.
鈥淲e are delighted to present this recital in honor of Black History Month,鈥 says Dr. Lise Keiter, Chair of the Music Department at Mary Baldwin. 鈥淥ur performers have chosen works that feature texts by two great African-American poets, Toni Morrison and Langston Hughes.鈥

The program features two appealing, recent song cycles:聽Four Songs聽by Andre Previn (set to Morrison鈥檚 texts) and聽Genius Child聽by Ricky Ian Gordon (set to poems of Hughes).聽聽鈥淏oth Emily and I are dedicated to performing works with composers or poets from underrepresented groups,鈥 explains soprano Katherine Jolly.聽聽鈥淲e鈥檙e also committed to performing new works, which our recent CD,聽Preach, Sister, Preach听蝉丑辞飞肠补蝉别蝉.鈥
厂辞辫谤补苍辞听聽has appeared in leading roles with Opera Theatre Saint Louis, Florida Grand Opera, New York City Opera, Virginia Opera, Lyric Opera Cleveland, American Lyric Theatre and others. In the concert arena, she performs widely, including recent appearances as the soprano soloist in Handel鈥檚聽The Messiah聽with the Evansville Philharmonic, the Richmond Symphony, and the Phoenix Symphony.聽聽A winner of the 2006 Metropolitan Opera National Council Grand Finals, the聽New York Times聽wrote 鈥淜atherine Jolly used her agile, bright lyric soprano to superb effect.鈥澛犅燚r. Jolly is currently Associate Professor of Voice at Oberlin Conservatory, and she previously held faculty positions at St. Louis University and Indiana University.
笔颈补苍颈蝉迟听聽made her international solo debut at The Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila, where she was praised for 鈥渢onal beauty and clarity,鈥 鈥渁 graceful, effortless manner,鈥 and a 鈥渧ibrant, 鈥 spirited and movingly expressive鈥 performance.聽聽An active soloist and chamber musician, her collaborations include performances with musicians of orchestras and institutions around the world, including recitals with members of the Cincinnati, San Francisco, Detroit, Nashville, Charlotte, and Virginia Symphony Orchestras, and faculty of the Juilliard School,聽University of Cincinnati College鈥揅onservatory of Music,聽Indiana University, Oberlin Conservatory, and Florida State University.聽聽She is on the faculty of Randolph College.
颁别濒濒颈蝉迟听聽performs with the groundbreaking flute and cello duo聽Terra Voce.聽聽Known for creative programs combining the diverse and the unexpected, they have thrilled audiences at venues across the country such as the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center and New York鈥檚 Riverside Church.聽Gabbert currently teaches at 大象传媒, and maintains a private studio in Crozet and Charlottesville, VA.
